Breakthrough T1D: past, present, and future

As we drive toward curing type 1 diabetes, we help make everyday life better for the people who face it.

Who we are & what we do

Founded in 1970 by families whose loved ones had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D), Breakthrough T1D is a tax-exempt nonprofit 501(c)3 organization.

As the leading global type 1 diabetes research and advocacy organization, we help make everyday life better while driving toward cures.

We are opening doors that were once closed by T1D diagnosis. We lead the way to more effective solutions by connecting the brightest minds to advance treatments, influence policy, and improve access to care. By driving innovation forward, Breakthrough T1D will make type 1 diabetes a condition of the past.

Accelerating T1D breakthroughs

Breakthrough T1D invests in the most promising research to turn ideas into life-changing therapies, including cures.

How we maximize your donations

With your support, Breakthrough T1D is creating a movement to improve and change life with type 1 diabetes, advancing breakthroughs on the way to cure the condition. No organization does more to improve everyday life with T1D—from driving millions of dollars of global investment in therapy development and access, to advancing research, advocacy, and community support.

Today, we are leading the way to more effective solutions. Tomorrow, we will make this condition a thing of the past.

Cures for T1D are a matter of when, not if. We are closer than ever to taking off our devices and walking away from the condition for good.”

Meet our leadership

Breakthrough T1D was founded by volunteers, and today is led by a powerful partnership between our most dedicated volunteer leaders and our executive team—most of whom either live with type 1 diabetes or have loved ones with the condition. Aaron J. Kowalski, Ph.D., is the first person with T1D to serve as our organization’s Chief Executive Officer.

Creating a world without T1D

Achieving our vision of a world without T1D requires global collaboration. Approximately 9 million people around the world live with the condition. Our five affiliates—Australia, Canada, Israel, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom—are pivotal partners in breaking barriers to therapy access and in funding research for life-changing T1D breakthroughs.
